Ten years of reporting, and this is what the camera does on its own time. Nine conditions I can work in. Every one of them already shot.

A crew finishing an art car in a scrapyard, weeks before the drive to Nevada. Nobody stops for the camera. That is the deal in November too: people planting, and me keeping out of the way.

The storm comes over the breakwater on its own schedule. You cannot light it and you cannot move it. You can only be there early, and stay after everyone else has gone in.

One lamp over a guitarist, a food stall under a string of bulbs, a Veyron by its own headlights. Rooms at the brightness they actually were, which is what an evening without grid power looks like.

A stranger gives you about a minute. Ask, frame, thank them. The picture keeps whatever their face was doing before they had time to arrange it, and the room stays legible behind them so they are somewhere, not in front of a backdrop.

The long lens is mostly waiting. Jets writing over the lakeshore, stock cars three wide, a hawk that finally turned. Compression puts a whole road into one layer, and a field will read the same way from the road.

One hot light and an evening. A window and a garden when the sun dropped behind the fence. The last hour on the harbour from the deck of a tall ship. Nothing here needed a truck, which matters when the whole kit has to fit in a daypack on a motorbike.

A loft with steel windows and whatever light was in it: grey January daylight, sunset through the glass, then gels once it went. Three meet-ups there, dozens of strangers, a few minutes each. The habit is the same one a village will ask for: work a room you did not set up, fast, and leave it as you found it.

Black and white gets decided before the shutter, never added after. Take the colour away and what is left is gesture. The figure can go all the way dark because the gesture carries it.

The reporter's habit: turn around. The crew behind the set, the pit mid-change, the photographers lined up on the deck. The story behind the picture is usually a picture too.

A record El Niño is forecast to peak between November 2026 and January 2027. That is a forecast, not a verdict, and no seasonal system has been graded against an event this size. I will be in Zambia and Malawi from 12 to 28 November, with farmers planting into it, and back in May 2027 for the same fields and the same families at harvest.
Everything above is the rehearsal. Fund the pair of trips, or commission one leg. Partial funding scales the route, never the method.
